Wood Ducks’ Logo To Be Unveiled Wednesday

The final bow will be put on the realignment of the California and Carolina Leagues on Wednesday when the Down East Wood Ducks (formerly the High Desert Mavericks) unveil their logo.

The team’s name was revealed on Nov. 2, but the logo has remained under wraps. Brandiose, which has been behind rebranding campaigns for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Florida Fire Frogs and New Orleans Baby Cakes, teased the new logo on Twitter on Monday evening.

The Wood Ducks, who will move into Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C., continued preparations by demolishing the Saltwood Products building to make room for additional parking.

One of the more recognizable characters in the Eastern League is in a hospital after he was struck last week by an SUV in Wyomissing, Pa. Adam “Disco” Briscoe, 32, is the unofficial first fan of the Reading Fightin Phils. Briscoe is best known for the arm-gyrating dance he’s performed before Reading home games since 2010. The Fightins put a statement on their website expressing their sympathies, and people around the Eastern League tweeted their support of Briscoe.

A representative at Reading Hospital, where Briscoe is being treated, said on Monday that Briscoe remains in critical condition.

Minor League Baseball announced on Monday it had reached an agreement with the Association of Minor League Umpires on a new five-year deal that will keep the groups aligned through the 2021 season.

“We are glad that the two sides were able to work together on an agreement that will ensure labor peace through the 2021 season,” MiLB’s vice president of baseball and business operations Tim Brunswick said. “This agreement allows us to continue to manage the costs involved with hiring, training, developing and evaluating the professional umpires that preside over games played between our 160 teams in the United States and Canada.”
The deal was negotiated by Brunswick, International League president Randy Mobley, MiLB’s umpire development director Dusty Dellinger and Mekesha Montgomery of the law firm Frost Brown Todd.
