LONG BEACH, Calif.—The White Sox beat the Rangers 7-5 at the 2016 Area Code Games Sunday night.
Lefthander Reid Detmers (Glenwood High, Chatham, Ill.) struck out six batters in 2 2/3 strong innings, including striking out the side, for the White Sox.
Detmers said his focus was on getting first-pitch strikes and credited a strong curveball for his success.
Ryan Vilade (Frisco (Texas) High) went 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk. Aware of the high quality of pitching talent at the showcase, he said his goal was to drive the ball to the outfield.
The White Sox’s Conner Uselton (Southmoore High, Moore, Okla.) drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning with a single and finished the game with two RBIs. Calvin Greenfield (Jenson Beach (Fla.) High) continued his strong showcase by driving in two runs with a double in the third.
Asa Lacy (Tivy High, Kerrville, Texas) started the game for the Rangers and pitched two scoreless innings.
