Where Top Unsigned HS Players Are Headed For College

The draft signing deadline passed last Friday without much drama, as the players who intended to sign by and large had done so well before Friday.

Now that the deadline has passed, it is easier to see where the top unsigned prep players are headed for school this fall. Below is a chart of all the high school players who ranked in the BA 500 who did not sign pro contracts, sorted by their college commitment.

California prep righthander Jared Horn, who was No. 32 on the BA 500, was the highest-ranked player not to sign. He was picked in the 20th round by the Brewers, but will instead uphold his commitment to California. Horn throws his fastball up to 96 mph, mixing in a promising changeup and curveball.

Florida prep infielder Drew Mendoza was the only other player ranked in the top 50 who didn’t sign. He will instead head to Florida State.

Mississippi leads all schools with seven players from the BA 500 in its incoming freshman class. North Carolina brings in six and Florida and Louisiana State have five each.

Overall, 127 high school players in the BA 500 did not sign pro contracts, nine more than each of the past two years. Of those players, 41 are committed to schools in the Southeastern Conference, accounting for 32.5 percent of the unsigned BA 500 recruits. Pac-12 Conference schools will take in 25 unsigned BA 500 recruits, and the Atlantic Coast Conference will get 20.
