USA Baseball on Tuesday unveiled the first matchups for next month’s National High School Invitational. Archbishop McCarthy High (Southwest Ranches, Fla.)—the No. 3 high school team in the country—will open the tournament against Arlington (Tenn.) High, while No. 7 South Hills High (West Covina, Calif.) will face No. 31 Brother Rice High (Chicago).
The NHSI will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., from March 29-April 1.
McCarthy has a deep squad loaded with promising talents on the mound and in the lineup. McCarthy should contend for its second national championship this year, and a strong performance at NHSI could cement it as one of the nation’s top teams. Arlington should put up a quality fight, lead by senior Tyler Gentry (an Alabama commit) and junior Tate Kolwyck (a Vanderbilt commit).
South Hills has a chance to win the entire tournament, given its depth on the mound and dangerous position players, but the Huskies will first have to get past a Brother Rice team that might be the best team in the midwest. The Crusaders are strong on the mound, with seniors Ryan Kutt and Jack Guzek leading the charge.
