Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 22, 2021
Akil Baddoo, OF, Tigers. A couple of years ago, the Tigers drafted Victor Reyes in the Rule 5 draft. The Reyes’ pick paid off, as he’s proven to be a useful addition to the rebuilding Tigers outfield. Now, it looks like the Tigers are succeeding again in the Rule 5 draft. Detroit nabbed Baddoo out of the Twins organization in last December’s Rule 5 draft. He’s proven to be one of the team’s best hitters this spring. He hit his fourth home run on Sunday. Maybe as impressively he has eight walks this spring, which explains his .357/.500/.857 slash line. Baddoo has never played above high Class A, and even that high Class A stint was a short one because of a elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. That said, he’s showing polish to go with his impressive tools.
Jeremy Pena, SS, Astros. Pena hit his second home run of the spring for Houston. The Astros’ No. 3 prospect has had an up-and-down spring. He’s hitting .167/.200/.500, as he has flashed his power potential.
Jonathan India, 2B, Reds. India went 1-for-2 on Sunday, raising his spring stats to .344/.475/.625. India played both second and third base early in the spring, but the Reds are clearly trying to settle him in at second base now. He’s playing regularly there now, getting 16 plate appearances in the past week.
Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic, OFs, Mariners. The future of the Mariners lineup gave a nice sneak peek on Sunday as both homered. It was the second home run of the spring for each of the Mariners’ top two prospects.
Garrett Mitchell, OF, Brewers. If you’re looking for what 2020 draft pick has had the most impressive spring, it’s hard to top Mitchell. He went 1-for-1 on Sunday to improve his slash line to .500/.545/.700. He’s shown the ability to stay in against lefties. He’s shown some power and he’s also showed off his top-of-the-scale speed with a 3.95 second home-to-first time on an infield single.
Andrew Vaughn, 1B, White Sox. Speed is not supposed to be one of the reasons Vaughn has a shot to earn a regular role in Chicago. But the smooth-swinging first baseman/DH cranked a triple on Sunday. In his 160 games over three years at California and his 55 pro games, Vaughn had hit one triple, so this is a rarity to remember.
