Sommer Impresses At White Sox Tryout

The White Sox last week hosted the second of seven tryouts on the Area Code Baseball circuit, this one at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.

Some 117 players competed in front of more than 70 pro and college scouts. The White Sox can only hope for the same kind of impact in the MLB Draft as the 2015 roster had. Riley Pint ended up being the No. 4 overall pick to the Rockies, while shortstop Gavin Lux went No. 20 to the Dodgers.

In comparison to the talent last year, one White Sox scout said, “There were some good athletes today that showed some power and leverage. But, overall, position player-wise, it was an average day.

“The run times were tremendous. In the 60s, there were some 6.4s in there and several 6.6s. We’re starting to see some athletes who can run.”

Several of the arms impressed as well, including 6-foot-9 righthander Ben Jordan, from Olive Hill, Ky. Other standouts at the tryout included Carmel (Ind.) High lefthander Tommy Sommer; Sterling Heights Stevenson High (Shelby Township, Mich.) righthander Lucas McGuire; Detroit Country Day (Farmington Hills, Mich.) outfielder Steve Mann, and two-way Delta High (Albany, Ind.) standout Adisyn Coffey.
