Six Thoughts On Draft’s Sixth Round
• The Reds were in deep to see the Jason Groome-Tyler Mondile matchup in May at Campbell Stadium in Camden, N.J., where Mondile pitched tremendously. He was up to 96 mph in that game and might have pitched his way into the sixth round; he’s committed to Florida State.
• The Padres got righthander Will Stillman, whom some scouts in the Southeast liked as a priority senior sign. He’s got a good body at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds and was a 29th-round pick in 2015 of the Red Sox. He averaged 13 strikeouts per nine innings for his career (198 in 137 1/3 innings) thanks to a 92-95 mph fastball and a breaking ball that ranges from serviceable to plus at its best. Some scouts saw a changeup that made them think Stillman could get a chance to start as a pro after 106 relief appearances at Wofford.
• Most scouts considered righty Zack Trageton the top prep arm available this year in Nevada. The Vegas product added some size to his 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame this year and some velocity came with it, up to 94 mph. He can spin a breaking ball and is a two-way signee to Utah, which probably would give him a chance to hit as a first baseman.
• The Giants took their third college outfielder of their first five selections with Pacific’s Gio Brusa, a senior who was one of the top sluggers in the Cape Cod League in 2014. Brusa had a rough junior season that started with a lot of swing and miss and ended with an elbow injury that he came back from just before the draft. Brusa bounced back as a senior with a career-best 14 homers and .614 slugging percentage. He’s a switch-hitter with power who trimmed his strikeout rate as a senior.
• Kyle Cody has had two eventful turns in the draft at Kentucky. He was the Twins’ second-round pick in 2015 but didn’t sign after the two sides disagreed on the medical exam. Cody returned for his senior season (see story here) and improved his breaking ball and pitchability a bit, lowering his ERA and throwing more strikes while staying healthy, making all 14 of his starts for the Wildcats. Cody failed a drug test before the draft, testing positive for adderrall.
• The Mets will try to fix Stanford’s Chris Viall, first by giving him a chance to pitch through his command issues. Viall, a 6-foot-9 righthander whose fastball can sit 93-96 mph with a power curve in the 80 mph range, walked 72 and struck out 68 in 99 career innings for the Cardinal.
