LONG BEACH—The Royals closed out their 2016 Area Code Games campaign with a 4-1 win against the Athletics.
Arthur Pate (Shorewood High, Seattle) went 3-for-4 for the Royals, with two RBIs and a run. Pate said he wanted to treat the Area Code Games as an experience more than a showcase. He added that he wanted to work on getting stronger by next spring.
Jeremy Yelland (Central Valley High, Spokane) pitched a strong game for the Royals with two scoreless innings.
“Throw the ball hard,” Yelland said when asked what his approach was to pitching at the Area Code Games. His goal over the summer was to work on his consistency.
The Royals’ Isaiah Smith (Battle Ground (Wash.) High) continued his hot streak at the plate and went 5-for-5 in two games Wednesday.
Braydon Altorfer (Vacaville (Calif.) High) opened the scoring for the A’s with a home run in the top of the third, and went 2-for-3 in the game.
