Rick Porcello Wins AL Cy Young Award
Rick Porcello, whose 22 wins led the American League, became the first Red Sox pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2000 to win the Cy Young Award.

Porcello had the AL’s best strikeout-to-walk ratio at 5.91 and his WHIP was 1.01, just behind former Tigers teammate Justin Verlander, who finished second. The Indians’ Corey Kluber finished third.
“Obviously, there’s a lot of emotions that were built up inside me and came out,” Porcello said when asked about his reaction. “It was very emotional . . . hard to not start bawling on the spot.”
Porcello, 27, ranked fourth in opponents’ OPS at .635. His 137-132 margin is the second closest of any election since ballots permitted voting for more than one pitcher in 1970.
Verlander, the 2011 winner, also finished second in 2012 to the Rays’ David Price, 153-149. Porcello and Kluber were the only pitchers named on every ballot.
“Justin, I learned a lot from him, and obviously I wish him well,” Porcello said. “I also texted (NL Cy Young winner) Max (Scherzer) right after I saw that he won it. It was a very nice night. Something I won’t forget.”
Porcello got eight first-place votes, while Verlander got 14. But Porcello was listed by all 30 voters, while Verlander was left off two ballots—Fred Goodall of The Associated Press and Bill Chastain of MLB.com.
Porcello was asked about the vote and Verlander.
“He loves the game the way I love the game . . . we both share a strong passion for it. He had a hell of a year.”
Porcello is just the fourth Red Sox pitcher to win a Cy Young. Roger Clemens won it in 1986-87 and ’91; Pedro Martinez in 1999 and 2000 and Jim Lonborg in 1967.
“It’s pretty incredible to be mentioned with those three other Red Sox players, and then Pedro and Roger. It doesn’t feel real right now,” he said. “Just because I grew up watching those guys. They were my idols growing up, and I had the utmost admiration for what they’ve done in the game. To be in that category is, I can’t express my gratitude. It’s pretty humbling. I never thought I’d be in that position to mention my name with those guys.”
