Prospect Report: Workman, Antico Double Up

Mike Antico, OF, Cardinals: Antico, the Cardinals’ eighth-rounder out of Texas in 2021, made headlines this past season by stealing 67 bases, but thievery wasn’t the only part of his game. He showed a little power, too, swatting 31 doubles and 14 home runs. On Tuesday, he gave himself time to stroll around the bases by slamming his first two longballs of the fall in Salt River’s rout of Scottsdale.

Gage Workman, SS, Tigers: Workman is one of several Arizona State alumni playing in this year’s AFL (including Salt River and Detroit teammate Colt Keith and Surprise/Rangers outfielder Trevor Hauver), and on Tuesday he proved he was plenty comfortable back in the desert. The 23-year-old fourth-round pick from 2020 slugged two of Salt River’s five home runs, the second of which was a fifth-inning grand slam that helped the Rafters bust the game even further open.

Andy Pages, OF, Dodgers: If there’s a book on Pages, the AFL hasn’t found it yet. The powerful Dodgers prospect went 2-for-4 on Tuesday for Glendale, including his fourth homer of the fall. The blast put Pages into a four-way tie for second place among the league’s home run leaders, one behind Scottsdale’s Heston Kjerstad (Orioles).

Noelvi Marte, SS, Reds: Marte was one of the key pieces in the trade that sent Luis Castillo from Cincinnati to Seattle. He started slowly in the 2022 regular season before becoming molten hot during the summer months in the Northwest League. On Tuesday, he crushed a 461-foot home run in Glendale’s loss to Surprise. The home run was his second of the AFL.

Luis Medina, RHP, Athletics: Medina was part of the package the Yankees used to acquire righthander Frankie Montas from Oakland. The live-armed righthander started for the Toros Del Este on Tuesday and struck out five of the 13 hitters he faced over 2.2 one-run innings.

Jackson Chourio, OF, Brewers: The summer’s breakout star is continuing his season with Zulia in the Venezuelan Winter League and doesn’t appear to have cooled off by even a degree. The 18-year-old went 2-for-4 hitting out of the leadoff spot and threw in his first stolen base for good measure. Chourio is 5-for-12 to begin his second season. His brother, Jaison Chourio, also got into the game in the later innings.

Lenyn Sosa, SS, White Sox: Sosa took one of the biggest leaps forward in the White Sox’s system this year and impressed enough to make his big league debut. With Chicago’s season over, he’s in the Venezuelan Winter League with Caracas. On Tuesday, he collected a pair of hits—including a double—scored two runs and walked twice while hitting in the two-hole during his team’s win.
