Prospect Report: Tigers’ Kreidler Homers Twice
Wednesday’s Prospect Performers
Shea Langeliers, C, Athletics: Langeliers is quickly settling in with his new organization after being dealt to Oakland for Matt Olson. Langeliers homered and walked. He also did commit his second error in two games. Since defense is one of the hallmarks of Langelier’s game, this is a little puzzling. Yesterday it was a throwing error on a stolen base. Tuesday’s error was a little more unusual as it came on catcher’s interference.
Ryan Kreidler, SS, Tigers: Kreidler was probably the most pleasant surprise in the Tigers minors last year as the shortstop exceeded expectations at the plate. He’s done the same to start this year, as he homered twice on Wednesday.
Royce Lewis, SS, Twins: Back on the field after missing two seasons (2020 because of the coronavirus shutdown and 2021 because of a torn knee ligament, Lewis is showing his speed has come back. He stole his second base in two games and doubled.
Hawkeye Standouts
Hitting: No one topped 110 mph with an exit velocity on Wednesday. The Cubs Brennen Davis did hit a pair of balls at 107 mph.
Pitching: The Giants’ Gregory Santos was the hardest throwing pitcher of the night. He touched 99.3 mph and sat at 98 in a relief outing. Several pitchers (Cody Carroll, Robbie Erlin, Nick Snyder and Ian McKinney) topped 20 inches of induced vertical break on their fastball. That’s a measurement of the life of a fastball that could best be described as the hop in the top of the zone that makes it hard to square up. Mariners righthander Kyle Hill had a pitch with a measured 24.5 inches of induced vertical break. That would be exceptional and among the best seen in the majors last year, but as we noted yesterday, Tacoma’s Hawkeye unit appears to be measuring more IVB than an other park. It’s possible there is a calibration issue, or maybe the Mariners pitchers are just IVB masters.
Baserunning: Bubba Thompson had a sprint speed of 30.7 feet per second. A small explainer on sprint speed, which measures the speed of a player over their fastest 10-foot segment. A sprint speed on any one run of 30.0 feet per second is very good. In the majors last year, 25 percent of players had at least one 30.0 feet per second sprint speed. But when you get to 31.0 feet per second, then you are in the elite category. Only nine MLB players did that last year. Thompson isn’t there, but he’s not far off.
Fielding: Padres shortstop Eguy Rosario had a throw measured at 92.8 mph. That’s near top of the scale for an infielder.
