Prospect Report: Pedro Leon Stars And Struggles
Yesterday’s Prospect Performers
Pedro Leon, SS, Astros: Leon went 3-for-5 with a stolen base. That’s the good news. He also had both a fielding and a throwing error at shortstop.
Ryan Pepiot, RHP, Dodgers: Pepiot was as good as usual in his 2022 debut. He allowed only one hit in four scoreless innings while striking out three.
Matt Krook, RHP, Yankees: Krook has bounced around, but there’s never been a question about his stuff. Making the Opening Day start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Krook threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Hawkeye Standouts

Ryne Nelson and Ryan Pepiot both has more than 20 inches of induced vertical break on their best fastballs (anything over 20 is considered a very “lively” fastball with hop up in the zone. Zack Weiss and Janson Junk both had more than 23.5 inches of vertical break on their best fastballs, although there is a chance the Tacoma Hawkeye isn’t as calibrated yet–that game had 26 pitches with 20+ inches of vertical break. In the other four PCL games, there were three pitches with 20+ vertical break.
Marty Costes (Astros) had the hardest hit ball of the night. His single had an exit velocity of 112.6 mph. Elehuris Montero (Rockies) was the other hitter to top 110 mph with a 111.1 mph exit velocity on a double.
Matthew Batten (Padres) went home to first in 3.86 seconds on a bunt single. Bubba Thompson had a sprint speed of 30.7 mph as a baserunner.
