Prospect Report: Oscar Colas Has A Huge Weekend

Oscar Colas, OF, White Sox—The White Sox’s No. 2 prospect showed off over the weekend in the Cactus League. In three games, Colas went 3-for-7 with two solo home runs. Overall, Colas, who is trending toward a spot on the White Sox’s Opening Day lineup, is 12-for-30 with one double, the two home runs and a stolen base. 

Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 3B, Reds—The man just keeps hitting. In a camp with bigger names like Elly De La Cruz, Noelvi Marte and Matt McLain, the former Twins prospect has been outstanding. Encarnacion-Strand collected three more hits over the weekend, including a double and a home run. He is 15-for-26 this spring, and his four home runs are tied for the most by any player in spring training. 

Marcelo Mayer, SS, Red Sox—Boston’s top prospect made his Grapefruit League debut on Sunday and didn’t disappoint. The 2021 first-rounder went 1-for-2 with a double and scored a run. Mayer posted an .888 OPS in 2022 during a season spent mostly at Low-A Salem. 

Hayden Wesneski, RHP, Cubs—The righthander, who came over from the Yankees in the Scott Effross deal, has been nails this spring. He spun four perfect innings with four strikeouts on Saturday. On the spring, Wesneski—who tossed an immaculate inning during his big league time last year—has gone 8.2 innings and has allowed one run (unearned) while striking out 11. 

Parker Meadows, OF, Tigers—The younger Meadows simplified his swing mechanics last year and has begun to see results. Detroit’s 2018 second-rounder went 3-for-6 with a pair of home runs and a walk over the weekend. The two home runs doubled his spring total and leaves him in a 10-way tie atop the spring leaderboard. 

Yainer Diaz, C, Astros—Houston’s top position prospect had an excellent weekend. The former Guardians farmhand—who was sent to Houston in the Myles Straw deal—went 5-for-6 (including four doubles) over two games. The outburst gave Diaz’s spring a big boost—he had just one hit in his previous dozen at-bats entering the weekend. 

Miguel Vargas, 2B, Dodgers—After taking time to rest a dinged-up hand, Vargas began swinging the bat again and has immediately gotten the results fans would expect. He went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and three runs over the weekend.

Jasson Dominguez, OF, Yankees—After an excellent season in 2022, Dominguez has delighted Yankees fans all spring. The 20-year-old outfielder socked his fourth home run of the spring over the weekend and is now tied with nine other players atop the spring leaderboard. The longball was one of two hits Dominguez collected in two games. 

Kyle Manzardo, 1B, Rays—One of the biggest Ray-velations in the minor leagues last year, Manzardo has kept on raking in Grapefruit League action. The Washington State alum hit .327 with a 1.046 OPS in 2022, including 30 games in Double-A. He went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run over the weekend and is now 6-for-18 with two doubles and two homers this spring. 

Orelvis Martinez, SS, Blue Jays—The young man has power. Of this, there can be no doubt. Martinez walloped a couple more baseballs over the weekend, resulting in a double and a home run. After hitting 30 home runs in 2022 at Double-A New Hampshire, Martinez has two longballs in 12 spring at-bats.
