Phillies lefthander Matt Imhof, a second-round pick in 2014 from Cal Poly, had his right eye surgically removed following an accident while doing some post-game stretching last week.
Imhof himself posted the news on his Instagram account.
Imhof, pitching at high Class A Clearwater, was injured doing an exercise routine at Brevard County’s Space Coast Stadium. He was hit in the face while using a rubber resistance band anchored to a wall. According to philly.com, the mounted base broke off the wall.
It’s unclear if Imhof will attempt to continue his baseball career, but he did say “(it was) decided that the best chance I had to live a normal life was to have my right eye removed.”
