The Phillies made a deadline deal Tuesday to bolster their bullpen, swapping a top 10-ranked organizational prospect for White Sox relief pitcher Tanner Banks.

Banks, who’s spent the past three seasons on Chicago’s MLB squad after a lengthy minor league career, has a 3.89 ERA in 108 career appearances.

The return on the deal is a considerably younger player in William Bergolla, a native of Venezuela who signed with Philadelphia as an international free agent in 2022. He came in at No. 10 in BA’s most recent midseason update of the Phillies’ Top 30 prospects list. You can see the complete list of prospects here.

PHILLIES RECEIVE

Tanner Banks, LHP
Age: 32

Banks is a lefthander with a five-pitch mix that includes a slider, sinker, changeup, curveball and four-seam fastball. His slider and four-seamer are his two most frequently-used offerings, making up roughly 63% of his output. He gets plenty of whiffs and grounders, and has been excellent against lefthanded hitters.

WHITE SOX RECEIVE

William Bergolla, SS
Age: 19

Bergolla opened eyes in 2023 when he jumped to Low-A Clearwater without playing a game in the Florida Complex League. The switch-hitter has played to script again in 2024, this time at High-A Jersey Shore, where he’s made tons of contact without much impact. Entering play on deadline day, he’d struck out at a low 11% clip but had just 16 extra-base hits. Bergolla has mostly played second base this season but has sprinkled in a bit of time at shortstop, as well. He has an above-average arm and plus speed.
