The latest edition of the Arizona Fall League is just days away, with opening day scheduled for October 7.
On Wednesday, the league gave fans their first look at the league’s initial rosters, which feature 13 of Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects. The group is led by Mariners shortstop Colt Emerson, who ranks No. 11 on the current iteration of the list.
To preview the 2024 season, we’ll be breaking down rosters for each AFL team. You can find the complete set of rosters as part of our AFL fan guide here.
Peoria Javelinas
Top 100 Prospects: Colt Emerson, SS, Mariners (11), Ethan Salas, C, Padres (17), Leodalis De Vries, SS, Padres (31), Cole Young, SS, Mariners (50), Drake Baldwin, C, Braves (78)
Other Intriguing Prospects: The Brewers in recent years have become adept at excavating draft gems from small schools all around the country. Entering the year, Ryan Birchard was poised to be the next in the collection. An oblique injury limited his season to just 21.1 innings, however, meaning he’ll need to make up for some of that lost time in the Fall League. He worked primarily with a mid-90s fastball and a slider but mixed in a curveball and a very occasional changeup, as well … Perhaps the biggest wild card in the entire AFL is Marlins righthander Jun-Seok Shim, whom Miami acquired from Pittsburgh at this year’s trade deadline. The righthander has pitched just eight career innings, all of which came in 2023. At his best, Shim works with a mid-90s fastball that peaks around 98 mph and a curveball with 3,000 rpm of spin. He mixes in a slider, as well, though the last time he was healthy he was working to make the two breaking pitches more distinct … Quietly, Padres first baseman Romeo Sanabria was one of the better performers, not only in San Diego’s system, but in all the minor leagues. He is one of just 10 minor leaguers 22 or younger to hit .280 with 30 or more doubles and 10 or more home runs.
