Padres Fire CEO Mike Dee
The Padres on Wednesday announced they had fired president and CEO Mike Dee. Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune first reported Dee was being let go. No reason for the departure was given.
The team issued a one-sentence statement which read that executive chairman Ron Fowler and managing partner Peter Seidler, “Today announced the departure of Padres President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Dee.”
Dee became embroiled in multiple controversies during his tenure, which began in July 2013. He oversaw the naming of the “Bud Selig Hall of Fame Plaza” at Petco Park, despite the city’s ire toward the former commissioner over threats to move the franchise in the late 1990s without a new stadium.
He also oversaw the firing of popular broadcasters Andy Masur and Bob Scanlan, defended the organization’s drafting of football player Johnny Manziel, and laid off the hosts of the TV show “Padres Social Hour” midseason in 2016. In June, four Padres blogs coordinated an effort to simultaneously call for Dee’s firing.
Dee’s standing became even shakier when MLB ruled the Padres omitted relevant medical data from trading partners during the season, leading to a 30-day suspension for general manager A.J. Preller and reportedly a seven-figure fine for the organization.
Preller reportedly will stay with the organization despite his suspension.
Dee previously worked for the Padres from 1995-2002 as a business executive and the Red Sox from 2002-2009, including seven seasons as their chief operating officer.
