No. 1 Pick Moniak Gets $6.1 Million Bonus

The Phillies have signed No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak for a $6.1 million bonus, sources close to the negotiations have confirmed to Baseball America.

Moniak, an outfielder out of La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad, Calif., received the second-largest bonus of the draft thus far, behind the $6.2 million bonus for Reds pick Nick Senzel, the No. 2 overall selection out of Tennessee.

The bonus pool allotment for the No. 1 overall pick was $9,015,000, so Moniak’s signing was nearly $3 million below pick value. For perspective’s sake, the pick value for the No. 1 selection was larger than the entire bonus pools for 20 clubs. Moniak’s signing should allow the Phillies plenty of wiggle room to sign second-round pick Kevin Gowdy, as well as fitting the above-slot $1.1 million bonus they spent on third-rounder Cole Stobbe, an infielder out of Omaha.

Moniak is expected to be assigned to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League to start his pro career.
