Mookie Betts, Alex Wood Honored For Big Weeks
Outfielder Mookie Betts of the Red Sox and lefthander Alex Wood of the Dodgers on Monday were named American League and National League player of the week for the week ending May 14.
Betts was 9-for-24 in six games with three homers, four doubles and 11 RBIs. He was first in the AL in total bases (22), extra-base hits (seven) and slugging .917.
Carlos Correa of the Astros also got votes afer hitting .455 with 10 RBIs, and Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph hit .524 with six RBIs.
In the NL, Wood was 2-0 and did not allow a run in 11 innings, striking out 21 with just two walks. Wood is the second Dodgers player to claim the award in as many weeks following Cody Bellinger the previous week. Yasmani Gradal, Wood’s teammate, also had a big week, hitting .591 with four doubles and eight RBIs.
