Division Previews
Nailing No. 1 overall draft picks is not supposed to be this easy, but the Orioles hit home runs with Adley Rutschman in 2019 and Holliday in 2022. They both may help Baltimore do big things in 2024.
Bobby Witt Jr. shored up a lot of the areas he needed to address last season—defensive reliability, chase rate, impact frequency—and even made strides in terms of production versus righthanders in the second half. If he finishes top three this year, then the Royals add a PPI draft pick in 2025.
Not many MLB players have been as productive through age 22 as Julio Rodriguez, whose list of accomplishments includes two all-star nods in two seasons, two top-10 MVP finishes, two Silver Sluggers, a Rookie of the Year trophy and a 30-30 season. According to one NL scout, the best is yet to come.
After spending eight seasons as the standard in right field, Mookie Betts seamlessly moved back to second base, his prospect position from a decade earlier, and turned in his typical excellent season. Betts has one MVP award and three runner-up finishes. He has at least one more MVP season in him.
Ronald Acuña Jr., the reigning National League MVP, led the league in a half dozen key categories last season, as he produced the first 40-70 season in MLB history. It was also the first 40-60 or 40-50 season in history. Acuña will be hard-pressed to top his 2023 effort, but he has a lot of room to fall back to the pack and still produce at an MVP level as the leadoff man for the juggernaut Braves.
Dansby Swanson is a rock-solid shortstop defender with good power and a track record of durability. So while Swanson isn’t necessarily flashy, he is an anchor for a Cubs team positioned to win the division.
