Minor League Transactions: July 14–Aug. 14, 2024
This installment collects all transactions involving minor league players, i.e. those not on 40-man rosters, for the period July 14 to Aug. 14. As always, transactions are conveyed by Major League Baseball.
The abbreviation that follows each player listing refers to his minor league level, either Triple-A (AAA), Double-A (AA), High-A (A+), Low-A (A), Rookie-level Complex League (R) or Dominican Summer League (DSL).
This edition of transactions covers more than four weeks—and what an active four weeks it was.
• 742 players signed minor league contracts
Most of the signees are 2024 draft picks. Others are undrafted players. Most of these players were assigned to Rookie-level rosters. The Arizona and Florida Complex league seasons ended July 25, so these players were added to ACL and FCL reserve rosters, awaiting potential full-season league assignments.
Still other signees are previously contracted players or independent league players signed to round out minor league rosters.
• 466 players were released from minor league contracts
MLB organizations purge their minor league rosters after the draft. They need to create rosters spots for all the 2024 imports, while keeping their domestic minor league head count at 165 players or lower.
• 207 players were placed on or transferred to the long-term injured list
Minor league players on the 60-day or full-season IL do not count against the domestic minor league player limit of 165. Organizations may place as many as 15 players on the minor league 60-day IL at one time. Full-season IL slots are infinite, but those players may not play in a game this season.
• 86 players who were not on 40-man rosters were traded
Dozens of other 40-man roster players were also traded ahead of the July 30 trade deadline, including power-hitting catcher Agustin Ramirez, the top prospect traded this summer.
Not all trades appear in this installment. Only those including at least one minor league player are tracked here. For example, the Marlins traded big league lefthander Trevor Rogers to the Orioles for Triple-A players Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers. All three players were on 40-man rosters, so this trade does not appear in Minor League Transactions.
