Texas Rangers
Signed:
RHP Paolo Espino (re-signed) | OF Brett Eibner

The Rangers signed 29-year-old Brett Eibner to a two-year minor league contract. Texas knows the outfielder will miss all of 2018 after having Tommy John surgery last August, but Eibner offers the promise of big righthanded power in 2019—and possibly the potential to pitch, either as a full-time reliever or two-way player.

A 2010 second-round pick out of Arkansas, Eibner both hit and pitched in college, recording a 4.34 ERA with 56 strikeouts and 11 walks in 58 innings as a junior. As a member of the Dodgers organization in 2017, he began to seriously consider a move to the mound and even threw a number of promising bullpens sessions before blowing out his elbow.

In parts of two seasons in the majors with the Royals, Athletics and Dodgers, Eibner has hit .191/.263/.355 (66 OPS+) with eight home runs in 87 games.
