Atlanta Braves
Released: RHP Landon Hughes
Chicago Cubs
Signed: OF Wynton Bernard
Chicago White Sox
Signed: RHP Gonzalez Germen (Orix (Japan)) | 3B Diego Goris
Reliever Gonzalez Germen throws an excellent changeup but didn’t throw enough strikes (5.1 walks per nine innings) to succeed in short major league stints with the Mets, Cubs and Rockies. The 30-year-old righthander pitched for Orix in Japan last season, where he struck out 51 in 47 innings to go with a 2.68 ERA in 44 appearances.
A tidbit about Germen’s changeup from his time in the majors: He generated swinging strikes with his changeup 27 percent of the time he threw the pitch. For perspective, Fernando Rodney, another changeup-reliant reliever, has a 20 percent swinging-strike rate with the pitch. Rodney is superior to Germen in every other way, but having a changeup that batters struggle to contact, whether thrown in the zone or not, gives Germen a good starting point.

Signed: OF Allen Craig (released by Red Sox, June 30)
The Padres signed 33-year-old SoCal native Allen Craig, a first baseman and corner outfielder, to a minor league deal following three poor seasons at Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox system. Boston acquired Craig and Joe Kelly when it traded John Lackey to the Cardinals in 2014. Craig hit just .139 with a 21 OPS+ in parts of two seasons with the Red Sox before being removed from the 40-man roster for good after the 2015 season. He was released last June.
