Minor League Baseball Celebrates Valentine’s Day

Just because it’s Valentine’s Day, don’t for a second think mascots get the day off to spend with their significant others. (Yes, some mascots have significant others). Instead, they’re hitting the streets bringing baskets of chocolates, cards and other pink and red treats to fans across the country. And because this is the social media era, fans on Twitter got to join in on the fun.

Here’s Bumble, the Salt Lake Bees’ resident merrymaker, getting ready to surprise a fan.

The Johnson City Cardinals’ mascot, Jay-Cee, also got in on the fun.

Ninety minutes north of Johnson City, the Tennessee Smokies were sending Slugger the Bear (one of the Smokies’ three mascots) was following in his colleagues’ furry footsteps.

And just a few minutes away from the Baseball America offices, Wool E. Bull, the reigning winner of the BA’s Best Mascot award in last year’s Best of the Minors survey, was doling out holiday cheer.

Of course, these aren’t impromptu visits. Fans can pay for the mascot appearances along, which come with deals on tickets, refreshments and merchandise. Johnson City, for example, offered 10 tickets, plus two more for Opening Day, a box of chocolate or a teddy bear, and the mascot appearance for $50.

And if you didn’t get a mascot surprise at your home or office, don’t feel bad. Nearly every team sent out pun-laden messages to their fans over Twitter. The Lowell Spinners came up with one of the more clever versions.

And of course, baseball spent Tuesday giving its fans the greatest gift of all: the return of pitchers and catchers to spring training.
