Midwest League All-Star Rosters
The Midwest League all-star game is set for June 21 at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, home of the Kernels, the low Class A affiliate of the Twins. The Rays, Cubs and Padres have heavy representation for the East.
For the Rays, former Michigan two-way star Jake Cronenworth has had a breakout 2016, as Matt Eddy wrote. Kevin Padlo, acquired from Colorado in the Jake McGee deal, has shown power with eight homers and a good batting eye, posting a .343 OBP despite a .194 average. For the Cubs, righthander Adbert Alzolay isn’t missing as many bats as a starter, but he’s tough to square up. Speaking of tough to square up, lefthander Carson Sands has yet to allow a homer as a pro, but has struggled with command. Big-money Cuban signee Eloy Jimenez is flashing all of his tools, ranking among MWL leaders in homers, hits, RBIs and slugging. Center fielder Donnie Dewees has plus speed and a great approach and his 10 triples lead the league.
The Padres have five representatives, including catcher Austin Allen, who began the year on fire, before slowing down in May. Sleeper righthander Enyel de los Santos, acquired from the Mariners for Joaquin Benoit, has a power fastball and good command of it, and Jacob Nix, working in the tandem system, has shown improved command. Toolsy outfielder Michael Gettys is second in the league in steals.
Also members of the Eastern squad are former Missouri State co-aces Jon Harris and Matt Hall, who BA profiled recently.
The Western team is similarly loaded. Kyle Tucker, the No. 5 overall pick a year ago, is the lone Astros representative, and leads the league with 23 steals. Young Brewers prospects Jake Gatewood, now a third baseman, and Isan Diaz, acquired from the Diamondbacks for Jean Segura, make up the starting left side of the infield, while righthander Marcos Diplan, acquired for Yovani Gallardo, is blossoming in full-season ball.
Former UNC enigma Skye Bolt, who is a veritable toolshed, represents the Athletics. Also from the A’s organization is righthander Angel Duno, who is not overpowering, with a fastball that ranges 88-92 mph but sits 90, with some sink and cut and an burgeoning changeup. Former Texas A&M workhorse Grayson Long represents the Angels. Long has an above-average fastball with good angle that sits 92-93 mph this season, and his secondary pitches—a slider and changeup—are works in progress.
Three members of the ballyhooed Peoria rotation will be in Cedar Rapids as well, including Brennan Leitao, and hard-throwers Derian Gonzalez and Ryan Helsley. Junior Fernandez and Sandy Alcantara had strong cases as well, but were not chosen.
