Miami Marlins 2020-21 International Signing Preview
This is part of Ben Badler’s 2020-21 international signing day preview. You can also find his international big board of 2020 prospects here.
Yiddi Cappe, an 18-year-old Cuban shortstop, was a free agent eligible to sign during the 2019-20 signing period. However, he’s waiting until the bonus pools reset in the 2020-21 signing period, which now opens on Jan. 15, 2021, to sign with the Marlins for a bonus expected to be around $3.5 million. Cappe is a tall, skinny shortstop with long arms and legs and stands out for his quickness and smooth actions in the field. A $3.5 million bonus will probably rank among the top five in the class.
The Marlins are also expected to sign Ronald Hernandez, one of the top catchers this year in Venezuela. Hernandez projects to stick behind the plate because of his strong catch-and-throw skills for his age, with his actions getting quicker over the past year as he’s gotten stronger, and a solid bat for a catcher from the left side.
Dominican outfielder Kevin Guerrero is also linked to the Marlins for a bonus expected to check in around $500,000. Another Dominican outfielder, Jorge Perez, is also expected to sign with the Marlins, as is Venezuelan lefthander Luis Baldiris.
