Mejia’s Hit Streak Reaches 48
After sitting out the weekend, Francisco Mejia doubled in his first at-bat Tuesday, extending his hit streak to 48 games, the seventh-longest streak in baseball history and the longest since the minors were reorganized in 1963.
Mejia’s hit came for high Class A Lynchburg (Indians) against Potomac (Nationals).

Mejia’s hitting streak has surpassed James McOwen’s 2009 streak for the longest since the minors were reorganized in 1963. Only one of the six longer hitting streaks occurred after World War II.
Mejia’s streak began on May 27 with a 2-for-4 day against Fort Wayne. His streak has endured through a promotion to the Carolina League and a prospective trade. Mejia was to be the key piece in the Indians’ acquisition of catcher Jonathan Lucroy. But when Lucroy declined to waive his no-trade clause, Mejia remained with Lynchburg. He’s hit safely in his four games since that trade fell apart.
Mejia also is chasing the Carolina League hit streak record. He has hit safely in his first 24 games as a Carolina Leaguer, putting him seven short of the league’s record, a 31-game hit streak in 1948 by Pat Cooper of Martinsville.
