McGwire Part Of New Hall Of Fame Ballot
Mark McGwire, who dropped off the Baseball Writers Association of America ballot this year, and George Steinbrenner are two of the 10 people who will be voted on for possible enshrinement to the Hall of Fame on the new Today’s Game Era ballot.
The ballot, which allows for votes on players who made their impact from 1988 on, was unveiled by the Hall in July as part of voting changes.
The other eight candidates are former players Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, player/managers Davey Johnson and Lou Piniella, executive John Schuerholz and former commissioner Bud Selig.
Voting is Dec. 5 at the Winter Meetings in Maryland. Seventy-five percent of the vote from a 16-member panel is needed for election. Inductees will be announced on Jan. 18 and enshrined on July 30.
The finalists were selected by a BBWAA-appointed Historical Overview Committee from all eligible candidates among managers, umpires, executives and long-retired players whose most significant career impact was realized during the time period from 1988 through the present.
