Max Scherzer Wins NL Cy Young Award

Max Scherzer, who led the National League in wins, strikeouts, WHIP, walk-to-strikeout rate and Wins Above Replacement level, won the NL Cy Young Award on Wednesday.
The Nationals righthander got 25 of 30 first-place votes, with the Cubs’ Jon Lester getting one first-place vote to finish second and teammate Kyle Hendricks finishing third and getting two first-place votes.
Scherzer also won the Cy Young award in 2013 while with the Tigers, joining Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Gaylord Perry and Roy Halladay as Cy Young Award winners in both leagues.
“Having this be the second one verifies everything I set out to achieve,” Scherzer said in a conference call with reporters. “Winning the second one confirms everythign I try to do, works.”
Scherzer, 31, was the only pitcher listed on every ballot. He was 20-7, 2.96—seventh-best in baseball—and his opponent average of .196 was second in the NL.
“It shows when we work together as teammates we can accomplish anything,” he said. “It’s the culmination of everything from coaching staff to how they prepared us to everybody working together in unison and competing at the same level.”
Scherzer wasn’t aware of how close the vote was in the AL Cy Young, where former Tigers teammates Rick Porcello and Justin Verlander finished 1-2, just five votes apart. But when asked about it, he said he was not surprised.
“It shows, in the five years we spent together that we all looked out for each other, and tried to find ways to make each other better. Critiquing each other, and understanding how we needed to get better.”
