Masyn Winn’s Throw Sets Record At Futures Game
Masyn Winn called his shot.
On Friday, the Cardinals Double-A shortstop said in his Baseball America/Louisville Slugger Prospect Pad interview that his goal and his plan was to break the MLB Statcast record for the hardest infield throw if he got a chance in the 2022 Futures Game. Not only that, he wanted to become the first infielder ever recorded to have made a 100-plus mph throw.
And on Saturday on the first ground ball he got, Winn set his feet and uncoiled a throw that Statcast measured at 100.5 mph.
One throw, two predictions fulfilled.
“I was excited about it. I grabbed the ball, it was just a little slow roller, and I felt like I could get a little bit of momentum behind it so I tried to let that one go a little bit. I was trying to hit 100, so I’m glad I saw that number pop up.”
“I actually didn’t see it at first. Bobby Miller, he came up to me later in the game and asked me how hard it was and I was like “it had to be up there, probably high-90s,” and he was like ‘Bro, you just hit 100, that’s crazy.” I was like that’s pretty sweet.”
Before Saturday, the hardest Statcast (2015-2022) infield throw on an assist was Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz’s 97.9 mph throw earlier this year.
Winn’s throw topped that by 2.6 mph. As we wrote last year, it’s a safe bet to say that he has the best infield arm in pro baseball. Now he’s gotten another chance to prove it.
