Marlins Scout Cuban Outfielder Yadiel Hernandez In Private Workout
Yadiel Hernandez, a 28-year-old Cuban outfielder, had a private workout with the Marlins at Marlins Park on Saturday, with president of baseball operations Michael Hill among those in attendance.
Hernandez, who is a free agent exempt from the international bonus pools, is a lefthanded corner outfielder who ranked as the No. 16 player in Baseball America’s April 2015 rankings of the Top 20 players still in Cuba. Hernandez ranked second in Serie Nacional in batting average and OBP in his final season (2014-15) in Cuba, batting .369/.509/.535 with 77 walks, 47 strikeouts and seven home runs in 369 plate appearances, with his value tied into his ability to get on base more so than his power.
Hernandez could play left or right field, but he would be a tough fit for Miami’s current outfield, which has Giancarlo Stanton in right, Christian Yelich in left and Marcell Ozuna in center. The Diamondbacks, Brewers and Rockies are three other notable teams that have popped up in connection with Hernandez recently.
