Nuno, originally a 48th-round pick of the Indians in 2009 from Baker (Kan.), was the Yankees’ No. 30 prospect entering 2014. The Yankees traded him to Arizona in July 2014 for Brandon McCarthy and the Diamondbacks sent him to Seattle along with Mark Trumbo in June 2015. Nuno made one start among his 55 appearances in 2016. Despite a solid ERA, he was not particularly effective against lefthanders (.293/.333/.476) or righthanders (.287/.318/.493). He allowed 1.7 homers per nine innings but somewhat limits damage thanks to solid control (1.7 walks per nine innings). He figures to be a swingman for the Dodgers.

The longtime Phillies catcher was sent to the Dodgers in August in a deal that was controversial because it involved A.J. Ellis, Clayton Kershaw’s personal catcher. Kershaw was vocal about the deal, not so much about Ruiz’s acquisition but the subtraction of Ellis, a popular clubhouse figure. Ruiz remains a solid receiver, rating as plus-four in runs saved above average by Baseball Info Solution, and he threw out 42 percent of basestealers, the best in the National League.
