Little League World Series: Day 5 Recap

Monday at the Little League World Series was an elimination day for four teams. Include a solar eclipse and there was plenty of action in Williamsport.
Monday’s Results (Loser Eliminated):
Michigan 11, Italy 7 (Consolation)
Mexico 1, South Korea 0
Venezuela 3, Dominican Republic 2
Connecticut 14, Washington 6
Tuesday’s Games (Elimination Games):
11 a.m. Australia vs South Dakota (Consolation) (ESPN)
3 p.m. Mexico vs. Venezuela (ESPN)
7:30 p.m. New Jersey vs. Connecticut (ESPN)
U.S. Player of the Day—R.J. Vashey, New Jersey
Vashey led the way for the high-powered New Jersey offense, helping the Garden State boys get by California. The first baseman hit a solo home run in the second inning and followed that up with a two-run dinger in the third. He finished the day 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Combined with added power from teammates Charlie Meglio and J.R. Osmond, New Jersey stays alive and will move on to face Connecticut on Tuesday.

International Player of the Day—Omar Romero, Venezuela
Facing elimination and down all game, Venezuela came to the bottom of the sixth trailing 2-1. After getting the tying run on base with a single followed by a walk, the 4-foot-8 Romero stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off triple as the Venezuelans survived and advanced to face Mexico on Tuesday.
