Lindor Leads Puerto Rico Over Mexico
Francisco Lindor homered twice to lead Puerto Rico to a 9-4 win over Mexico on Saturday in Jalisco, Mexico in Pool D play.
Lindor hit a two-run shot to open the scoring in the first inning and a solo homer in the second to help Puerto Rico (2-0) pull away.
Javier Baez added a two-run homer in a four-run ninth for Puerto Rico, which never trailed.
Brewers prospect Jorge Lopez pitched 4.1 innings sharp innings for the win. The 24-year-old righthander yielded just two hit and one run, walked two and struck out five.
Miguel Gonzalez took the loss for Mexico (0-2). The White Sox righthander surrendered four hits and four runs in four innings, walked three and struck out three.
Luis Juarez and Brandon Laird both went 2-for-4 to lead Mexico’s offense.
Puerto Rico can claim Pool D with a win over Italy on Sunday at 3:30 ET. Mexico will try to avoid going winless at home when it faces Venezuela at 10 p.m.
