Jose Abreu, Charlie Blackmon Named Week’s Best
White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu is the American League Player of the Week and Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon is the National League Player of the Week for the week ending May 28, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.
Abreu, 30, hit .452 (14-for-31) with seven runs scored, three doubles, two home runs and five RBI in seven games during the week. That included his 100th career home run on May 23 against the Diamondbacks. This is the Cuban defector’s fourth career Player of the Week award and first since Sept. 2015.
Blackmon, 30, hit .400 (12-for-30) with three home runs, 12 RBI, six runs scored, a double, a triple and a stolen base over seven games. The effort helped him reach 40 RBIs in his 47th game, the fastest any leadoff hitter has gotten to 40 RBIs since 1920 according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It is Blackmon’s fifth career Player of the Week award.
