J.D. Martinez, Jake Lamb Honored For Big Weeks
J.D. Martinez has come back with a bang.
The Tigers outfielder, who missed the first 33 games of the season with a foot injury, was named AL Player of the Week for the period ending May 21 after going 7-for-18 with four homers, nine RBIs and 10 walks in six games.
In nine games overall, Martinez, 29, is 11-for-27 with six homers, 12 RBIs and 11 walks. Martinez is the first Tigers player to hit six homers in his first eight games of a season since Chris Shelton in 2006, and the first AL slugger since Nelson Cruz did so for the Rangers in 2010.
Meanwhile, Jake Lamb won the NL Player of the Week award after going 7-for-17 with four homers and 10 RBIs in five games. The Diamondbacks third baseman, 26, is hitting .288/.385/.558 and his 11 homers rank in the top 10 in the NL. This is Arizona’s first weekly award since JBrandon Drury took home NL weekly honors last season (Sept. 18).
