The Yankees are finalizing a trade to acquire Marlins star Jazz Chisholm, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. They will reportedly send C Agustin Ramirez, SS/2B Jared Serna and INF Abrahan Ramirez, per ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.

Ramirez (No. 3) and Serna (No. 11) both ranked in the top half of New York’s farm system. You can see the Yankees’ Top 30 Prospects here.

Chisholm, 26, entered Saturday hitting .249/.323/.407 with 13 homers and 22 steals through 101 games with the Marlins. This is the second time he’s been traded at the deadline. The D-backs dealt Chisholm, ranked as the No. 59 prospect in baseball at the time, to the Marlins in exchange for RHP Zac Gallen at the deadline in 2019.

More to come…

YANKEES RECEIVE

Jazz Chisholm, OF/2B
Age:
26

Chisholm was already a buzzy name thanks to his youth and talent, and a possible position switch from center field back to second base could stir the pot even more for the former All-Star. Despite some injury concerns and recent scuffles at the plate (.198 average in July), the 26-year-old provides both pop (13 home runs) and speed on the base paths (22 stolen bases). His whiff, strikeout and walk rates have all improved significantly from a year ago, too. Chisholm is arbitration-eligible again in 2025, meaning the Marlins will be keen to deal him before another spike in pay. Should he stick in the infield, Chisholm would provide added value on the trade market.

MARLINS RECEIVE

Agustin Ramirez, C
Age:
22

Over the past two years, Ramirez has hit his way into the upper tier of the Yankees’ system. The slugging backstop signed out of Venezuela in 2018 but, in part because of the pandemic, did not reach full-season ball until 2023, when he went from Low-A to Double-A over the course of a single season. Ramirez was placed on the 40-man roster this past offseason and followed it up with another smashing turn at Double-A. He is one of the best ball-strikers in New York’s system, but has run into a bit of trouble at Triple-A, in part because he’s been hitting the ball on the ground at a far higher rate. He is not a particularly adept defender—although he has a strong arm—and has gotten plenty of time at both first base and DH this season. No matter his future defensive home, the bulk of his value will come from his bat. He ranks as New York’s No. 3 prospect, behind only outfielders Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones.

Jared Serna, SS/2B
Age:
22

Serna emerged as a prospect two seasons ago in the Florida Complex League, where he showed outstanding bat-to-ball skills before running into a bit of trouble in his first test of full-season ball. He has rebounded over the last two seasons and has worked his way into the upper half of New York’s system, ranking No. 11 in our midseason update. He’s small but strong, with bat-to-ball skills and surprising raw power for his size. Scouts who’ve seen him this year with Hudson Valley report a player who looked a bit slimmer than in years past, which in turn has boosted his defense at shortstop, where he’s spent the bulk of his time this year. He doesn’t have a true plus tool on his card, but he has a chance to be a second-division regular up the middle.

Abrahan Ramirez, 2B/3B
Age:
19

Ramirez signed with the Yankees out of Venezuela in 2022 and has put up solid numbers in both the Dominican Summer and Florida Complex leagues. He is a smaller player who does a decent job putting the bat on the ball but doesn’t hit the ball particularly hard, having produced a 90th percentile exit velocity of around 99 mph. Ramirez is a versatile defender who can move around the infield but will likely not be better than fringe-average at any spot. Scouts who have seen him this year give him a shot to be an up-and-down big leaguer if he reaches his ceiling.
