Jacksonville Fires Coach Montez

Jacksonville has fired coach Tim Montez after just three seasons and after he led the team to a 33-22 record.

“We are very appreciative of Coach Montez’s contributions to our program and the University,” director of athletics Alex Ricker-Gilbert said in a statement. “He put the program back on steady ground and for that we are very grateful. The program has showed improvement on the field and our student-athletes have performed well in the classroom.”

The Dolphins had a strong regular season but were knocked out of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament in two games.

Ricker-Gilbert told the Florida Times-Union that the firing “was not a snap-of-the-finger decision.”

“This one was tough,” Ricker-Gilbert told the newspaper. “We’re really appreciative of Tim Montez’s time at JU. There was a lot of discussion on it. We looked thoroughly at his tenure and expiring contract and decided to go in a different direction for the future of the program.”

Montez was 80-85 in his three seasons after serving eight seasons as pitching coach before getting the head coaching job.
