Florida star Jac Caglianone on Saturday saw his home run streak end at nine games, leaving him tied for the NCAA Division I record.

Caglianone went 1-for-3 with two walks in Florida’s 6-2 victory at Vanderbilt. He also started the game on the mound and picked up the win after holding the Commodores to two runs on six hits and three walks in five innings. He also struck out five batters.

NEW MLB Mock Draft

Carlos Collazo projects first-round picks for every MLB organization as we enter late April.

Caglianone grounded into double plays in each of his first two plate appearances Saturday. He followed with a walk and a single before coming up with one out and a runner on second base in the ninth inning. Vanderbilt opted to intentionally walk him, a decision that didn’t pay off as Tyler Shelnut delivered a two-run double to give the Gators some extra insurance.

With Saturday’s result, Caglianone’s home run streak ended after nearly two weeks. The streak began April 6 at Missouri and he homered once in each of his next eight games to match the record set by Nevada’s Tyler Bosetti in 2021.

Caglianone came into Saturday’s game hitting .403/.492/.864 with 23 home runs, 21 walks and 14 strikeouts. Georgia’s Charlie Condon was the only player in the country with more home runs, edging him by two homers. Caglianone is also college baseball’s premier two-way player and began his start on the mound Saturday at 4-0, 3.89 with 49 strikeouts and 29 walks in 39.1 innings.

Caglianone last season led the nation in home runs with 33, a BBCOR bat era record. He reached that mark in 71 games as Florida finished as the runner-up in the College World Series. Caglianone is homering at a much higher rate this season, averaging 0.59 home runs per game compared to 0.46 last season.

Caglianone has hit 63 career home runs, leaving him 11 shy of the Florida career record held by Matt LaPorta. LaPorta’s 74 career home runs are also the most hit by any Division I player in the 21st century.

Caglianone is one of the top prospects in the 2024 draft and is projected to be a top-five pick thanks to his unique combination of power at the plate and on the mound, where his fastball reaches the upper 90s.
