Indians’ Allen, Cardinals’ Gomber Win AFL Weekly Honors

Indians speedster Greg Allen and Cardinals lefthander Austin Gomber were named Arizona Fall League players of the week on Tuesday.

Allen, playing for Mesa, led the AFL in extra-base hits (four) and homers (three) and hit .412. The 2014 sixth-round pick from San Diego State is hitting .366 overall and is second in slugging (.683). Allen has plus speed but has shown in the AFL a newfound ability to pop the ball over the fence, while stealing five of six bases.

Gomber, a 2014 fourth-round pick from Florida Atlantic, struck out 10 in 10 innings and won both of his starts this week. The 22-year-old lefty leads the AFL with 17 innings and is tied for the league lead with 19 strikeouts.
