High School Top 25: Shawnee Claims Top Spot After Huntington Beach Is Upset

The High School Top 25 looks far different this week than it did in our last ranking, when Huntington Beach (Calif.) was the top team in the country.
After a 4-1 upset loss to El Dorado (Placentia, Calif.) High in the Division I CIF Southern Section Quarterfinals, the Oilers—who were in the running to be the High School Team of the Year—fell to No. 23 and just barely avoid falling out of the rankings altogether. With the loss, the prep careers of touted prospects Nick Pratto and Hagen Danner are over, with the MLB Draft just two weeks away.

Shawnee (Okla.) High recently completed a 40-0 season en route to winning the Class 5A Oklahoma State Championship, and is the natural team to take over the top spot after being No. 2 in our previous ranking. No. 3 Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) moves up to No. 2 and No. 4 Calvary Christian High (Clearwater, Fla.) moves up No. 3 after completing a perfect season of its own and winning the Florida 4A State Championship.
McCarthy has a matchup in the semifinals of the Florida 6A State Championship with No. 13 Mosley High (Lynn Haven, Fla.) on June 1. That matchup will shake up the standings further, as playoff baseball continues to make high-ranking teams casualties of both underdogs (i.e., Huntington Beach) and other high-ranking teams: previously ranked No. 8 Buchanan High (Clovis, Calif.) lost to current No. 21 Clovis (Calif.) High in the state championship game of California’s CIF Central Section.
California in particular saw a shakeup with the start of playoffs. Five teams from the the Golden State dropped out of the rankings, including Buchanan, Moorpark (Calif.) High, Rancho Bernardo High (San Diego), Notre Dame High (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Harvard-Westlake High (Studio City, Calif.).
This week’s movement allowed teams from previously underrepresented states to climb into the Top 25, including Helena (Ala.) High, Central High (Baton Rouge, La.) and Etowah High (Woodstock, Ga.)—all of which won their states’ respective championships.
The final high school rankings will be published on June 13, where it will expand to the Top 50 teams in the country.
The top 25 teams are selected through a poll of representatives from the Baseball Coaches Association (BCA) and Baseball America. All records are as of May 28, 2017 and do not include ties.
