Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) High takes over the top spot in the Baseball America/Baseball Coaches Association Top 25 for the first time this season after sitting solidly in second place for several weeks.
Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) High falls just two spots from No. 1 to No. 3 after losing to our fifth-ranked team, South Hills (West Covina, Calif.) in the 2017 National High School Invitational. McCarthy did win its other three games, helping curb the severity of the drop.
“It’s one of our greatest wins I’ve ever had personally as a coach,” South Hills coach Darren Murphy said after topping then-No. 1 McCarthy last Thursday. “Ranks right up there at the top. Just amazing. These two kids and our team today, just so proud. Just excited. You know, when we get our back against the wall against a really good opponent brings the best out of us.”
Speaking of the NHSI, Orange (Calif.) Lutheran High went 4-0 en route to winning the tournament, jumping from No. 21 to No. 2 in the rankings with big wins over South Hills and Dana Hills (Calif.) High.
“For our program, for our school that supports our program, these guys have worked hard,” Lutheran coach Eric Borba said after winning the NHSI Saturday. “It means a lot to the whole community around Orange Lutheran High School. And we knew going into this year we were going to have a strong team with all the experience we’ve had.”
After a strong showing from California schools in the NHSI—in addition to continued strong play from California schools not involved in the tournament—the number of teams from the state increases from six last week to eight this week.
The top 25 teams are selected through a poll of representatives from the Baseball Coaches Association (BCA) and Baseball America. All records are as of April 2.
