High Desert Stadium Agreement Terminated
According to a report in the Victorville Daily Press, the Adelanto city council has voted to terminate its agreement with the High Desert Mavericks for the use of Stater Bros. Stadium, which houses the high Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the Mavericks will be booted from High Desert, however. City spokesman Michael Stevens left open the possibility of an amended contract with the team and its ownership, Main Street Baseball, LLC.
In rendering its decision, the city agreed that the current lease, which gives the Mavericks the use of the stadium for $1 a year, was a gift of public funds and violated the state’s constitution. The city welcomes the possibility of keeping the Mavericks, but only on what it believes would be a fairer contract for the city.
The Daily Press article also notes that the city believes Main Street Baseball owes funds promised for parking fees and use of the stadium’s conference rooms.
