Greeneville’s Wynne Fans 17, Tying Mark For Most In 2019
As a 26-year-old pitching in the Rookie-level Appalachian League, Greeneville’s Randy Wynne is a little more advanced than many of the batters he’s facing. In fact, no batter he faced on Tuesday night was older than 22. A couple were only 19.
But with that significant caveat, Wynne turned in one of the best pitched games we’ll see in the minors this year, striking out 17 as he one-hit Burlington for eight innings.
The Reds signed Wynne this season out of the independent Frontier League, where he had been pitching for Evansville. He’s had a long path to affiliated ball. After posting a 1.24 ERA for NAIA Missouri Baptist in 2015, Wynne spent two seasons in the independent United States Professional Baseball League before joining Evansville in 2018.
Wynne’s 17 strikeouts tied Phil Pfeifer’s mark for the most strikeouts by a minor league pitcher in 2019. Here’s a look at every pitcher to strike out 14 or more batters this season.
