Gordon Tests Positive For PEDs
Marlins all-star second baseman Dee Gordon has been suspended for 80 games for testing positive for exogenous testosterone and Clostebol, the league announced on Thursday. The news came shortly after Gordon’s single plated the tying run against the Dodgers, his former team.
Gordon, the son of ex-big leaguer Tom Gordon and the brother of Twins prospect Nick Gordon, was dealt from the Dodgers to the Marlins in late 2014 in a seven-player deal that also netted Los Angeles catcher Austin Barnes, reliever Chris Hatcher, utilityman Enrique Hernandez and—very briefly—lefthander Andrew Heaney. Infielder Miguel Rojas and righthander Dan Haren came with Gordon to Miami.
In his first season with the Marlins, Gordon broke out in a big way. He won the National League batting title with a .333 average and paced the majors with 205 hits and 58 stolen bases. He was named to his second All-Star Game and won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards.
He also signed a contract extension with the Marlins for five years and $50 million, beginning this season and lasting through 2020 with a $14 million team option in 2021.
In a statement, Gordon acknowledged the “mistake.”
“Though I did not do so knowingly, I have been informed that test results showed I ingested something that contained prohibited substances. The hardest part about this is feeling that I have let down my teammates, the organization, and the fans. I have been careful to avoid products that could contain something banned by MLB and the 20+ tests that I have taken and passed throughout my career prove this. I made a mistake and I accept the consequences.”
