Edinson Volquez, George Springer Named Players Of The Week

A no-hitter was enough to claim Player of the Week honors in one league. It took five home runs to win the honor in another.

Marlins righthander Edinson Volquez was named National League Player of the Week and Astros outfielder George Springer was named American League Player of the Week for the week ending June 4, Major League Baseball said Monday.

Volquez, 33, pitched the sixth no-hitter in Marlins franchise history in a 3-0 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Volquez walked two, struck out 10, and needed only 98 pitches to complete the feat. In his other start of the week, Volquez tossed six innings of one-run ball with three hits allowed in a 4-1 win over the Phillies. Volquez lowered his season ERA from 4.82 to 3.79 with the two outings.

Springer, 27, hit .500 (15-for-30) with 11 runs scored, a double, five home runs and nine RBIs in six games to earn his first career Player of the Week Award. Springer delivered six consecutive multi-hit games, including a pair of two-home run games, to help the Astros run their win streak to 10.
