East Cobb Alumni Wait Patiently
MARIETTA, Ga.–Each July, some of the best high school scouting can be done in Marietta, Ga., where a series of World Wood Bat Association tournaments are held at the East Cobb complex.
There are 124 travel teams from across the country competing in this week’s 17-and-under event, but also present have been two of East Cobb’s most recent alumni, unsigned outfielders Hunter Morris and Jason Heyward.
Morris was taken with the 84th overall pick by the Red Sox, but he’s seeking a signing bonus near $550,000, more along the lines of a bonus awarded to a top-60 overall pick. Sources say that the Red Sox would be willing to sign the power-hitting first baseman for $400,000. Morris has committed to Auburn.
Heyward has committed to UCLA, something that becomes obvious when you see him around the complex this week, sporting UCLA shorts and a Bruins cap. He said he’s “just waiting on (the Braves),” as the No. 14 overall selection by Atlanta continues to hold out.
Sources indicate the club has reached an agreement with Heyward on a $1.7 million bonus, although it has not yet been announced.
