Down East Shortstop Injured In Infield Collision
Down East Wood Ducks shortstop Danyer Cueva was taken away in an ambulance after he was involved in a freak collision with Salem shortstop Cutter Coffey during the first inning of Friday’s game between the two teams.
Coffey singled to lead off the game. After a strikeout, Jhostynxon Garcia singled to right field. Coffey advanced to third on the single. The throw back to the infield got away from second baseman Andres Mesa. Cueva was attempting to track down the ball between first and second while Garcia was running to second, trying to advance on the errant throw. They collided in between first and second.
Trainers and medical personnel quickly came out to attend to Cueva. He was immobilized, and was eventually taken away by an ambulance.

Rangers minor league infielder Danyer Cueva was involved in a collision while playing shortstop for the Down East Wood Ducks in tonight’s Carolina League contest vs. Salem at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, North Carolina. On a single by Jhostynxon Garcia in the first inning, Cueva was struck with a knee to his head during the play. He had full feeling and movement in all extremities and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital as a precaution. Cueva continues to be evaluated and the Rangers will provide updates as they are available.
