DL Stint Ends Cody Sedlock’s Season Early

The 2017 season ended a little early for righthander Cody Sedlock, last year’s first-round pick out of Illinois, who was placed on the high Class A Frederick disabled list on Aug. 25 with plans to shut him down.

The 22-year-old Sedlock is bothered by a strained right forearm, necessitating a second trip to the DL. He was shelved for three weeks in July with a right elbow flexor strain.

“As far as I know, it’s been diagnosed as tightness in his forearm, so it sounds like it’s a muscle strain,” executive vice president Dan Duquette said.

Sedlock went 4-5, 5.90 with a 1.72 WHIP in 20 starts in the Carolina League. Opponents hit .313 against him.

The Orioles will wait until Sedlock’s arm is fully healed before they put more innings on it. He totaled 90 this summer and will resume throwing later in the year.

“He’ll go to instructional league, and we’ll make sure we get him healthy going into the offseason,” farm director Brian Graham said.

Sedlock posted a 1.64 ERA through his first four starts before he began to struggle. He made nine starts last year at short-season Aberdeen and went 0-1, 3.00 in 27 innings.

Sedlock ranked as the organization’s No. 10 prospect at midseason.

Sedlock’s mid-90s fastball had dipped into the upper 80s in his final start.

Lefthander Keegan Akin, taken in the second round last year out of Western Michigan, has been out since Aug. 4 with a pulled oblique muscle. He’s also going to the instructional league in Sarasota, Fla., in September.

Akin logged 100 innings for Frederick and went 7-8, 4.14 in 21 starts.

• Righthander and 2013 first-round pick Hunter Harvey, recovered from Tommy John surgery he had last summer, was starting every Wednesday since returning to the mound. The Orioles want him to have a normal offseason and won’t send him out to pitch in the fall or winter.
