College Top 25 (May 2)
Florida and South Carolina split the first two games of their showdown series, and with the third game washed out by rain, it was enough for the Gators to keep the No. 1 ranking the Baseball America College Top 25, powered by Louisville Slugger.
The top six teams all stood pat from last week’s rankings, with the Southeastern Conference continuing to hold the top three spots with Florida, No. 2 Texas A&M and No. 3 Mississippi State. Another SEC team moved up to No. 7 as Mississippi climbed two spots following a series win against then-No. 8 Louisiana State. Texas Tech also moved into the top 10 at No. 8 after solidifying its hold on the top spot in the Big 12 Conference by taking two of three on the road at Texas Christian.
TCU and LSU slipped to Nos. 12 and 13, respectively, with Louisville, Vanderbilt and North Carolina State each bumping up one spot. Virginia and Oklahoma State were the big movers in the middle of the rankings. The Cavaliers won their third straight series by sweeping Pittsburgh on the road, and move up six spots to No. 16 in the new rankings. Oklahoma State jumped seven spots to No. 18 after building on its own series win over TCU by sweeping Texas, which puts the Cowboys in second place in the Big 12.
The bottom of the rankings continues to see plenty of turnover, with four more teams coming into the Top 25 this week. Florida Atlantic and Michigan State returned to the rankings with series wins against Southern Mississippi and Michigan, respectively. Creighton, the Big East leader, and Washington, the Pac-12 Conference leader, make their 2016 rankings debuts. For the Bluejays, they’re returning to the Top 25 for the first time since May 2007.
Falling out of the Top 25 are Michigan, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette.
The SEC leads all conferences with seven teams in the rankings, including six in the top 10. The Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams in the rankings.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through May 1 and do not include ties.
